Work Element from The Luthiers' Workshops

Plaster, initially a liquid, conforms to the shape of its solid mould. This led to the question of whether or not a liquid could be set into a form using a liquid of an opposing nature. Oil and water-based liquids of varying temperatures were used to explore this.

Constraining the unpredictable process of using cold water to solidify hot wax by using a rationalist steel grid allows for the forms created to be read at an architectural scale. The concept of transparency within the solid material still remains from my initial investigation and is an element of designing that I would wish to continue further in to the design.

WAX EXPERIMENTATIONS

The Luthiers' Workshops

Taking the form created, it was applied to a 1:20 drawing of the Luthier's Workshop. The Drawing shows the journey of both the Luthier and the timber and the process it goes to create both a 1/4 Violin and a Spanish Guitar (represented by the red and white lines. It includes a humidity controlled store-room on the left.
